ingenuity & pandemonium #002

We’ve all been to a conference, big church, or amazing service where you’re ticked at all the “stuff”.
You wish you had some of the toys they had!
What you could do with half of those lights…it’s not right.

One truth rings true no matter how big or small you are.
The number one most essential tool to a service production is communication.

Think about the last time a service you were involved in blew apart.
Most of the time, it isn’t a technical problem that ruins us.  It’s our communication breakdown.

No matter how big your church is.  No matter how small your tech team is.
No matter how few people volunteer.  No matter how many toys you have.

If you haven’t talked to your team, covered every base, walked through every scenario…
It’s too late.  You’re headed for a trainwreck.

As the leader of your team…set up a system for communication.
E-mail, phone call, iChat, meeting….something.

Your effectiveness is directly tied to your communication skills.

Oh Man is that the truth! Communication is critical. I find that I simply can’t over-communicate with my team. The team receives a “road map” from the worship pastor describing each element in detail. I work up a “tech order” that breaks each element down into the different areas (sound, lights, etc). We often have a “pow wow” before band practice, and again before services. And if things change, between services too.

Even with all that communication, there is still the possibility of a communication breakdown :)
