really? REALLY?

So I’m wrestling with some things lately and I thought…. What the heck, why not rassle in front of everybody? Everybody likes to see a good street fight.
I’m fighting the urge to go postal on blogging. (that makes no sense…I understand)
In the last two months, I’ve unsubscribed to more mainstream ministry blogs than I can count. The ones I’m subscribing to are completely different. They’re small…seldom heard of blogs that I love. Because they’re real. They aren’t talking about how amazing everything is.
Let me explain.
Why are we really blogging? I mean….really? To talk about what shirt we’re making next? To hype up what ministry we’re doing that’s so cutting edge? To show how many people our church had this past week and how we’re starting another campus in our own parking lot?
I’m looking for something real. And I’m guilty of posting things that aren’t really all that real.
I’m not obsessed with your next book plug. Or getting on your blogroll. Or link loving. Or HT’ing. Or whatever.
I’m wrestling with why I get caught up in all the hype. Why I’ve emailed some of the big blog guys and asked questions and never gotten a response? Why I find myself wanting to stay away from the blog gatherings at conferences?
I think if I was honest with myself…I got into this because it was a creative outlet for me. And I’d like to think maybe somebody could get something out of it along the way.
A laugh, a tip, an idea…a what not to do.
And I find myself really struggling to keep it innocent amidst all the fluff.
Amidst the hype. The crap. The constant “look what I can do”. The “look who I’m doing it with”. The cakes that are made out of plastic…but look amazing behind the glass.

That email must have gotten lost in the spam folder… wait… what do you mean I’m not a big blog guy? Dang! That’s cold man!
Seriously though, it took all a lot of convincing to get me to even come back to blogging. But I won’t do it the way I did before. I mentioned it before I came back that I keep reading blogs everyday that are all the same. Completely predictable. I want nothing to do with that. But there is still some relevance here. I’m with you in the search for exactly what that is.
Really glad you’re keeping it real. And keeping it in a place we can see it.

I read rob bell write something one time… he talked about how we as christians can claim each other’s stories. When someone on a blog or what not tells of a story of how that past weekend they saw a person who would of never stepped into a church or maybe hated God end up finding God its something that we could all celebrate and claim as our own because we are all apart of the Christian faith together. sometimes ministry blogs don’t seem to come across like that though talking about the new lighting setup or whatever. its a tough line to walk, i know i have been inspired in some way or another by this blog and other blogs that have ministry as a theme. hope all is well joe

Yikes.
I’ve had a similar epiphany…”Oh wait, I’m subscribing to this shallow, thoughtless blog just because every one else in the church subculture is….” *unsubscribe*.

Ronnie (MandoRon)
Well said. I’ve mostly stopped blogging about my church for that reason. I love my church, my the purpose of my blog isn’t to hype it.
It took me a while to realize the purpose of my blog, and to be comfortable with it. Because it doesn’t end up looking just like some of the big ones…

[...] Neil Greathouse had a great post last month about blogging that has crossed my mind on several occasions. Like Neil’s blog, “From the Mind of MandoRon” was started as a creative outlet for me. Period. End of story. [...]
